SPL: Boxing Day Bonanza

A full SPL card on Boxing Day to help you digest the turkey leftovers.

Well, maybe. Weather permitting. At the moment all the games are on. But that's subject to change. Motherwell are working on a burst pipe but are apparently confident the TV game will go ahead. A decision on the Hibs game and Aberdeen's ability to get to Edinburgh is being made tomorrow.

Fingers crossed.

Celtic v St Johnstone
It's nice to be home at Christmas. Even nice to get a win though. Lennon's lads have been lacking at home recently. Poultry related lethargy and poor form will give St Johnstone hope. A home win for me though.

Dundee Utd v Hamilton
United haven't played since 20 November. Hamilton since 27 November. Refreshed or rusty? Home win.

Hibernian v Aberdeen
Hibs capitulation at Pittodrie in October temporarily lifted some of the pressure on Mark McGhee. Aberdeen haven't won a league game since, sit bottom of the league and have a new manager. Can Craig Brown turn it around? Hibs' own revolution under Colin Calderwood has been stuttery. Draw.

Inverness CT v St Mirren
SPL shock troops Inverness host St Mirren who, under Danny Lennon, have been better than some predicted but not strong enough to be safe. Home win.

Kilmarnock v Hearts
Both teams off the back of 1-1 draws, Kilmarnock's at Celtic and Hearts at home to Inverness. It's a measure of both team's season that neither manager seemed happy to settle for a point. They might have to again though. Draw. GAME POSTPONED

Motherwell v Rangers
Will this game go ahead? Possibly. Will managerless spring a surprise? Possibly not. Away win.

  1. Here is my idea for the Scottish League, what about a 16 team league with the top 4 having a play off at the end of the season, plus though the pts from the whole season are included, also the bottom 2 relegated, and the 14th or 3rd bottom team play the 3rd team in the 1st divison, in a play off then the winner of that plays the 13th team in the premier, and the winner of that stays in the league. This would make the bottom 4 places exciting, and affect in most seasons most of the mid table. Also the 13th placed team get to choose who plays at home first in the play off, this guarantees that finishing 13th is better than finishinbg 14th, which makes the previous parts of the season meaningful. So the 8th-12th placed teams, have no play offs to play, so to cure a problem, there the 5th team could play the 6th, and 7th play 8th 9th play 10th and 11th play 12th. All as just 1 last game each, with the highest of those teams playing first, then thats 1 last game. You may say well its unfair the top 4 play 38 games, and the mid table teams, only 31, but mid table games surely are not much opf a draw anyway. Additionally, if the 5th placed team ends up with more points than the 4th placed team they would still finish ahead in my system. So the advantage of this system is it keeps the Oldf Firm playing eachother 4 times a season, and stops there being 4 games against not so big teams. The Old Firm is not such a draw for teams anymore, and could be a big draw again, if they only played these teams, twice a season, not 4 times. Also I would have a 16 team 1st Division, and 16 Team second division, the 16 team second divsion, would have 8 colt teams, and maybe the colt teams would be selects in some cases, Rangers would have a team, bit Motherwell and Hamilton could share a team, so have a regional select. Or maybe the likes of East Stirlingshire could become the colt sides, in a sense.
