Northern Leagues United

To Birtley yesterday for the unusual treat of enjoying three games for just three quid.

The Northern Leagues United day was raising funds for both Birtley Town and Cobaltore Onagawa, a Japanese club from the area of that country devastated by this year's tsunami.

The highlight of the day, I'm using the term loosely, was a clash between Northern League Fans and a motley collection of Football Writers.

Such twitter and blog luminaries as @gibfootballshow, @thefootyblognet and @STVGrant were on hand to prove that theoretical knowledge often endures a tortuous translation to practical ability, the fans securing the ExectalkSports Onagawa Cup with a 6-3 win.

Not since an earlier run in with Hibs legend Paul Kane's belly have I seen football shirts suffering such strain.

Cracking day though, topped off by a refreshingly no-nonsense bar.

Andrew Gibney of gibfootballshow was on hand to record a podcast of the post-match reaction, including me in the much more comfortable role of pundit.
